10 Psychological Studies That Will Change What You Think You Know About Yourself

Why do we do the things we do? Despite our best attempts to "know thyself," the truth is that we often know astonishingly little about our own minds, and even less about the way others think. As Charles Dickens once put it, “A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other.”
Psychologists have long sought insights into how we perceive the world and what motivates our behavior, and they've made enormous strides in lifting that veil of mystery. Aside from providing fodder for stimulating cocktail-party conversations, some of the most famous psychological experiments of the past century reveal universal and often surprising truths about human nature. Here are 10 classic psychological studies that may change the way you understand yourself.
We all have some capacity for evil.

Arguably the most famous experiment in the history of psychology, the 1971 Stanford prison study put a microscope on how social situations can affect human behavior. The researchers, led by psychologist Philip Zimbardo, set up a mock prison in the basement of the Stanford psych building and selected 24 undergraduates (who had no criminal record and were deemed psychologically healthy) to act as prisoners and guards. Researchers then observed the prisoners (who had to stay in the cells 24 hours a day) and guards (who shared eight-hour shifts) using hidden cameras.
The experiment, which was scheduled to last for two weeks, had to be cut short after just six days due to the guards' abusive behavior -- in some cases they even inflicted psychological torture -- and the extreme emotional stress and anxiety exhibited by the prisoners.
"The guards escalated their aggression against the prisoners, stripping them naked, putting bags over their heads, and then finally had them engage in increasingly humiliating sexual activities," Zimbardo told American Scientist. "After six days I had to end it because it was out of control -- I couldn't really go to sleep at night without worrying what the guards could do to the prisoners."
We don't notice what's right in front of us.
Think you know what's going on around you? You might not be nearly as aware as you think. In 1998, researchers from Harvard and Kent State University targeted pedestrians on a college campus to determine how much people notice about their immediate environments. In the experiment, an actor came up to a pedestrian and asked for directions. While the pedestrian was giving the directions, two men carrying a large wooden door walked between the actor and the pedestrian, completely blocking their view of each other for several seconds. During that time, the actor was replaced by another actor, one of a different height and build, and with a different outfit, haircut and voice. A full half of the participants didn't notice the substitution.
The experiment was one of the first to illustrate the phenomenon of "change blindness," which shows just how selective we are about what we take in from any given visual scene -- and it seems that we rely on memory and pattern-recognition significantly more than we might think.
Delaying gratification is hard -- but we're more successful when we do.

A famous Stanford experiment from the late 1960s tested preschool children's ability to resist the lure of instant gratification -- and it yielded some powerful insights about willpower and self-discipline. In the experiment, four-year-olds were put in a room by themselves with a marshmallow on a plate in front of them, and told that they could either eat the treat now, or if they waited until the researcher returned 15 minutes later, they could have two marshmallows.
While most of the children said they'd wait, they often struggled to resist and then gave in, eating the treat before the researcher returned, TIME reports. The children who did manage to hold off for the full 15 minutes generally used avoidance tactics, like turning away or covering their eyes. The implications of the children's behavior were significant: Those who were able to delay gratification were much less likely to be obese, or to have drug addiction or behavioral problems by the time they were teenagers, and were more successful later in life.
We can experience deeply conflicting moral impulses.
A famous 1961 study by Yale psychologist Stanley Milgram tested (rather alarmingly) how far people would go to obey authority figures when asked to harm others, and the intense internal conflict between personal morals and the obligation to obey authority figures.
Milgram wanted to conduct the experiment to provide insight into how Nazi war criminals could have perpetuated unspeakable acts during the Holocaust. To do so, he tested a pair of participants, one deemed the "teacher" and the other deemed the "learner." The teacher was instructed to administer electric shocks to the learner (who was supposedly sitting in another room, but in reality was not being shocked) each time they got questions wrong. Milgram instead played recordings which made it sound like the learner was in pain, and if the "teacher" subject expressed a desire to stop, the experimenter prodded him to go on. During the first experiment, 65 percent of participants administered a painful, final 450-volt shock (labeled "XXX"), although many were visibly stressed and uncomfortable about doing so.
While the study has commonly been seen as a warning of blind obedience to authority, Scientific American recently revisited it, arguing that the results were more suggestive of deep moral conflict.
"Human moral nature includes a propensity to be empathetic, kind and good to our fellow kin and group members, plus an inclination to be xenophobic, cruel and evil to tribal others," journalist Michael Shermer wrote. "The shock experiments reveal not blind obedience but conflicting moral tendencies that lie deep within."
Recently, some commenters have called Milgram's methodology into question, and one critic noted that records of the experiment performed at Yale suggested that 60 percent of participants actually disobeyed orders to administer the highest-dosage shock.
We're easily corrupted by power.

There's a psychological reason behind the fact that those in power sometimes act towards others with a sense of entitlement and disrespect. A 2003 study published in the journal Psychological Review put students into groups of three to write a short paper together. Two students were instructed to write the paper, while the other was told to evaluate the paper and determine how much each student would be paid. In the middle of their work, a researcher brought in a plate of five cookies. Although generally the last cookie was never eaten, the "boss" almost always ate the fourth cookie -- and ate it sloppily, mouth open.
"When researchers give people power in scientific experiments, they are more likely to physically touch others in potentially inappropriate ways, to flirt in more direct fashion, to make risky choices and gambles, to make first offers in negotiations, to speak their mind, and to eat cookies like the Cookie Monster, with crumbs all over their chins and chests," psychologist Dacher Keltner, one of the study's leaders, wrote in an article for UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center.
We seek out loyalty to social groups and are easily drawn to intergroup conflict.

This classic 1950s social psychology experiment shined a light on the possible psychological basis of why social groups and countries find themselves embroiled in conflict with one another -- and how they can learn to cooperate again.
Study leader Muzafer Sherif took two groups of 11 boys (all age 11) to Robbers Cave State Park in Oklahoma for "summer camp." The groups (named the "Eagles" and the "Rattlers") spent a week apart, having fun together and bonding, with no knowledge of the existence of the other group. When the two groups finally integrated, the boys started calling each other names, and when they started competing in various games, more conflict ensued and eventually the groups refused to eat together. In the next phase of the research, Sherif designed experiments to try to reconcile the boys by having them enjoy leisure activities together (which was unsuccessful) and then having them solve a problem together, which finally began to ease the conflict.
We only need one thing to be happy.
The 75-year Harvard Grant study --one of the most comprehensive longitudinal studies ever conducted -- followed 268 male Harvard undergraduates from the classes of 1938-1940 (now well into their 90s) for 75 years, regularly collecting data on various aspects of their lives. The universal conclusion? Love really is all that matters, at least when it comes to determining long-term happiness and life satisfaction.
The study's longtime director, psychiatrist George Vaillant, told The Huffington Postthat there are two pillars of happiness: "One is love. The other is finding a way of coping with life that does not push love away." For example, one participant began the study with the lowest rating for future stability of all the subjects and he had previously attempted suicide. But at the end of his life, he was one of the happiest. Why? As Vaillant explains, “He spent his life searching for love.”
We thrive when we have strong self-esteem and social status.

Achieving fame and success isn't just an ego boost -- it could also be a key to longevity, according to the notorious Oscar winners study. Researchers from Toronto's Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre found that Academy Award-winning actors and directors tend to live longer than those who were nominated but lost, with winning actors and actresses outliving their losing peers by nearly four years.
"We are not saying that you will live longer if you win an Academy Award," Donald Redelmeier, the lead author of the study, told ABC News. "Or that people should go out and take acting courses. Our main conclusion is simply that social factors are important ... It suggests that an internal sense of self-esteem is an important aspect to health and health care."
We constantly try to justify our experiences so that they make sense to us.
Anyone who's taken a freshman Psych 101 class is familiar with cognitive dissonance, a theory which dictates that human beings have a natural propensity to avoid psychological conflict based on disharmonious or mutually exclusive beliefs. In an often-cited 1959 experiment, psychologist Leon Festinger asked participants to perform a series of dull tasks, like turning pegs in a wooden knob, for an hour. They were then paid either $1 or $20 to tell a "waiting participant" (aka a researcher) that the task was very interesting. Those who were paid $1 to lie rated the tasks as more enjoyable than those who were paid $20. Their conclusion? Those who were paid more felt that they had sufficient justification for having performed the rote task for an hour, but those who were only paid $1 felt the need to justify the time spent (and reduce the level of dissonance between their beliefs and their behavior) by saying that the activity was fun. In other words, we commonly tell ourselves lies to make the world appear a more logical, harmonious place.
We buy into stereotypes in a big way.

Stereotyping various groups of people based on social group, ethnicity or class is something nearly all of us do, even if we make an effort not to -- and it can lead us to draw unfair and potentially damaging conclusions about entire populations. NYU psychologist John Bargh's experiments on "automaticity of social behavior" revealed that we often judge people based on unconscious stereotypes -- and we can't help but act on them. We also tend to buy into stereotypes for social groups that we see ourselves being a part of. In one study, Bargh found that a group of participants who were asked to unscramble words related to old age -- "Florida," "helpless" and "wrinkled" -- walked significantly slower down the hallway after the experiment than the group who unscrambled words unrelated to age. Bargh repeated the findings in two other comparable studies that enforced stereotypes based on race and politeness.
"Stereotypes are categories that have gone too far," Bargh told Psychology Today. "When we use stereotypes, we take in the gender, the age, the color of the skin of the person before us, and our minds respond with messages that say hostile, stupid, slow, weak. Those qualities aren't out there in the environment. They don't reflect reality."

The truth we hide at the expense of life, liberty and happiness




Those of us trying to make sense out of human nature ultimately face a terrible truth that most people take to the grave.

This truth is what prevents individuals, communities and nations from achieving lasting peace, success, happiness, health and all kinds of desirable things. This awful truth is behind our willingness to flirt with economic collapse, war and even our own extinction without doing much to prevent these things from actually happening. In fact, we continue to encourage them.

Humanity is on the brink, and we seem content in TV Land. Our health is in crisis and we suck down pastries and soda. Our economy is collapsing and we don't take time to prepare our homes to survive even a few days without going to the grocery store.

Are we that stupid? Yes, but why? How? What is really going on?

This is where we must confront the awful secret that the majority of us are guarding so closely that we wouldn't even recognize it, but that does not make it less true.

My goal is to do more than just tell you this common subconscious secret. I'm going to show you how to see it operating in plain sight all around you.

Once you see it in others, you may come to understand your own version of it, if you dare. To get started, we will need the help of an imaginary device.

Do the following experiment:

1. Imagine a pair of glasses with special lenses

The lenses install certain beliefs into your perception. If you insert lenses that say, "Life is beautiful," then the beautiful aspects of life will be revealed, like the cliche' "rose colored glasses."

If you insert "The world is dangerous," into the glasses, suddenly you will begin to perceive all the ways you might be harmed.

The imaginary glasses create a perceptual filter for interpreting your experience. If you look at the world through a consciously chosen filter or belief, then you can evaluate whether or not the belief seems accurate or serves you in some way. Keep it handy if you like the new belief. Discard it otherwise.

2. Install the average person's ugly secret

Once you are comfortable with the imaginary glasses concept, install the following lens and go about your business.

The lens to install is this: People are addicted to misery.

You can substitute any synonym you want for misery: unhappiness, rejection, shame, negativity, failure, etc...

What I mean is, people consistently do things to make themselves unhappy, even when they have a choice to do otherwise. Most of us are experts in the art of self-sabotage. We routinely mess up our diets, business plans, relationships, and all kinds of goals by doing the very things that make us feel like failures. Then, we give ourselves a thorough thrashing for doing it!

I have rarely met anyone, myself included, who does not have at least one area of chronic dissatisfaction. In the vast majority of cases, the individual is doing things that directly create the dissatisfaction, then complaining about it, magnifying the dissatisfaction many times over. Then, they do it all over again.

Here's the kicker. When you suggest obvious and available choices people might make to stop creating the misery, they resist or become defensive. It's an addiction we are dealing with here.

3. Don't analyze or make excuses for anyone - just observe, take notes

With your glasses on, simply observe how much reality might fit logically within your temporary belief. Does your new filter explain much of what you see going on around you? You might observe the following:

A person who wants to lose weight munching greasy potato chips.

A man deliberately doing childish things, inviting exasperation and correction from his wife.

A woman goading her husband into a fight.

A dad disrespecting his children, inviting rebellion.

A mom yelling about how much she hates it when people yell.

Someone who hates pressure procrastinating a project until the last minute.

A coworker thinking his supervisor is overbearing while dodging every opportunity to do his part at work, inviting closer supervision.

And so on...


Nations working on trust with other nations routinely break agreements. Countries in debt routinely overspend and borrow more money. Corrupt communities routinely elect the same corrupt officials. It is a cycle that just won't quit.

As you observe people engaging in these kinds of behaviors, does it support your temporary belief that people are addicted to misery? Does it appear they consistently do things that invite misery, pain and failure into their lives?

Achieving congruence with words and deeds

The field of Neuro-Linguistic Programming has long been an advocate of congruence, or personal alignment. Congruence means that your actions match your words.

Here are some examples:

Incongruent: You say you want to lose weight, then eat pizza and ice cream.
Congruent: You say you want to lose weight and follow a plan.

Incongruent: You say you want to save for retirement, but buy a new car instead.
Congruent: You say you want to save for retirement and do so.

Achieving congruence between your words and actions requires honesty and awareness. The deeper your honesty and insight, the deeper your congruence.

If you sabotage your diet on a regular basis, inviting feelings of frustration, shame, failure and general misery, then you can learn be honest about it. You might say to yourself:

I have sabotaged my diet. Honestly, I have come to expect and even find strange satisfaction in the feelings of shame and frustration that come when I blow a diet. I am willing to recycle these old feelings again and again and am even addicted to them. I don't know what life would be like without feeling bad, and I don't want to know, really.

Is this some kind of twisted affirmation?

No. It is simply the truth in many cases. It is not what we desire to be true. It is what is actually true. This is deep honesty, deep congruence. Living in this kind of honesty leads to change. Try it. The truth will indeed set you free.

Collectively, there is so much more at stake than weight loss or retirement savings. To create the world we all profess to want, we must deal with the fact that we are addicted to its opposite. Understanding the 10 Most Destructive Human Behaviors

Compared with most animals, we humans engage in a host of behaviors that are destructive to our own kind and to ourselves. We lie, cheat and steal, carve ornamentation into our own bodies, stress out and kill ourselves, and of course kill others. Science has provided much insight into why an intelligent species seems so nasty, spiteful, self-destructive and hurtful.
                                       Lie
Nobody knows for sure why humans lie so much, but studies find that it's common, and that it's often tied to deep psychological factors.

"It's tied in with self-esteem," says University of Massachusetts psychologist Robert Feldman. "We find that as soon as people feel that their self-esteem is threatened, they immediately begin to lie at higher levels."
Feldman has conducted studies in which people lie frequently, with 60 percent lying at least once during a 10-minute conversation.
And lying is not easy. One study concluded that lying takes 30 percent longer than telling the truth.
Recent studies have found that people lie in workplace e-mail more than they did with old-fashioned writing.
It's a whole other matter whether people really mean to lie in many instances. Figuring that out requires coming up with a complicated definition of lying.
"Certain conditions have to be in place for a statement to rise to the level of a lie," explains philosophy professor James E. Mahon of Washington and Lee University. "First, a person must make a statement and must believe that the statement is false. Second, the person making the statement must intend for the audience to believe that the statement is true. Anything else falls outside the definition of lying that I have defended."
Animals are also known to be capable of deception, and even robots have learned to lie, in an experiment where they were rewarded or punished depending on performance in a competition with other robots.

                           Crave violence
Violence is found throughout recorded human history, leading some researchers to conclude that we crave it, that it's in our genes and affects reward centers in our brains. However, going back millions of years, evidence suggests our ancient human ancestors were more peace-loving than people today, though there are signs of cannibalism among the earliest pre-history humans.

A study in 2008 concluded that humans seem to crave violence just like they do sex, food, or drugs. The study, reported in the journal Psychopharmacology, found that in mice, clusters of brain cells involved in other rewards are also behind their craving for violence. The researchers think the finding applies to human brains.
"Aggression occurs among virtually all vertebrates and is necessary to get and keep important resources such as mates, territory and food," said study team member Craig Kennedy, professor of special education and pediatrics at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. "We have found that the reward pathway in the brain becomes engaged in response to an aggressive event and that dopamine is involved."
Many researchers believe violence in humans is an evolved tendency that helped with survival.
"Aggressive behavior has evolved in species in which it increases an individual's survival or reproduction, and this depends on the specific environmental, social, reproductive, and historical circumstances of a species. Humans certainly rank among the most violent of species," says biologist David Carrier of the University of Utah.

                                      Steal
Theft can be motivated by need. But for kleptomaniacs, stealing can be motivated by the sheer thrill of it. One study of 43,000 people found 11 percent admitted to having shoplifted at least once.

"These are people who steal even though they can easily afford not to," says Jon E. Grant of the University of Minnesota School of Medicine.
In a study in 2009, participants either took a placebo or the drug naltrexone — known to curb addictive tendencies toward alcohol, drugs and gambling. Naltrexone blocks the effects of substances called endogenous opiates that the researchers suspect are released during stealing and which trigger the sense of pleasure in the brain.
The drug reduced the urges to steal and stealing behavior, Grant and colleagues wrote in the journal Biological Psychiatry.
Theft may be in our genes. After all, even monkeys do it. Capuchin monkeys use predator alarm calls to warn fellow monkeys to scatter and avoid threats. But some will make fake calls, and then steal food left by those that scattered.
                                       Cheat
Few human traits are more fascinating. While most people would say honesty is a virtue, nearly one in five Americans think cheating on taxes is morally acceptable or is not a moral issue, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center. About 10 percent are equally ambivalent about cheating on a spouse.

People who espouse high moral standards are among the worst cheats, studies have shown. The worst cheaters tend to be those with high morals who also, in some twisted way, consider cheating to be an ethically justifiable behavior in certain situations.
Cheating on spouses by celebrities and politicians thought to be moral leaders has become rampant. The behavior has a simple explanation, experts say: Guys are wired to want sex, a lot, and are more likely than gals to cheat. The behavior may be particularly likely for men with power.
"People don't necessarily practice what they preach," says Lawrence Josephs, a clinical psychologist at Adelphi University in New York. "It's not clear to what extent people's ethical values are actually running what they do or don't do."

                            Cling to bad habits
Perhaps everything else on this list would be far less problematic if we were not such creatures of habit. In fact, studies have found that even when the risks of a particular bad habit are well-known, people find it hard to quit.

"It's not because they haven't gotten the information that these are big risks," says Cindy Jardine of the University of Alberta. "We tend to sort of live for now and into the limited future — not the long term."
Jardine, who has studied why people cling to bad habits, cites these reasons:
-- Innate human defiance
-- Need for social acceptance
-- Inability to truly understand the nature of risk
-- Individualistic view of the world and the ability to rationalize unhealthy habits
-- Genetic predisposition to addiction
People tend to justify bad habits, she says, by noting exceptions to known statistics, such as: "It hasn't hurt me yet," or, "My grandmother smoked all her life and lived to be 90."

                                     BullyBully
Studies have found that half or more of grade-school children experience bullying. A European study in 2009 found that children who bully at school are likely to also bully their siblings at home. That led a researcher involved in the study to speculate that bullying behavior often starts at home.

"It is not possible to tell from our study which behavior comes first, but it is likely that if children behave in a certain way at home, bullying a sibling for instance, if this behavior goes unchecked they may take this behavior into school," said Ersilia Menesini of the Universita’ degli Studi di Firenze, Italy.
But bullying is not just child's play. One study found that almost 30 percent of U.S. office workers experience bullying by bosses or coworkers, from withholding of information critical to getting the job done to insulting rumors and other purposeful humiliation. And once it starts, it tends to get worse.
"Bullying, by definition, is escalatory. This is one of the reasons it’s so difficult to prevent it, because it usually starts in really small ways,” says Sarah Tracy, director of the Project for Wellness and Work-Life at Arizona State University.
Experts say to combat workplace bullies, respond rationally, specifically, and consistently.
Why do we do it? To gain status and power, psychologists say. And for some, it may be hard to resist the behavior. Researchers have seen bullying behavior in monkeys and speculate that the behavior may stretch way back in our evolutionary tree.
           Nip, Tuck, Plump and Tattoo our Bodies
By 2015, 17 percent of U.S. residents will be getting cosmetic procedures, the industry predicts. Some would call it self-edification, of course, or art, or a way to kill time or perhaps rebel against authority. But in general, and given that people have died from cosmetic surgery procedures, what makes so many people so intent on artificially remaking themselves?

First, it's worth noting that while options at the body shop have never been more varied, the practice is ancient, often tied to cults and religions or power and status, and in fact much of the modern nip, tuck, paint, poke and plump procedures are benign compared with some ancient practices. People have reshaped their heads, elongated their necks, stretched their ears and lips, painted their bodies or affixed permanent jewelry for thousands of years.
Perhaps the strongest motivations nowadays are to be beautiful, however one might define that, or simply to fit in with a particular group.
The lure of beauty can't be denied as a prime motivator to nip and tuck. Studies have shown that shoppers buy more from attractive salespeople; attractive people capture our attention more quickly than others; and skinny people have an easier time getting hired and promoted.
"There's this idea that if you look better you'll be happier. You'll feel better about yourself," says psychologist Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Research Center for Women & Families. "And logically that makes so much sense, because we live in a society where people do care what you look like."
A sign of the times, as Baby Boomer age: While cosmetic surgery sales sagged during the recession, wrinkle-blasting laser treatments have skyrocketed.
                                      Stress out
Stress can be deadly, raising the risk for heart problems and even cancer. Stress can lead to depression, which can lead to suicide — yet another destructive behavior that's uniquely human (and glaringly not on this list).

But exactly why we stress is difficult to pin down. These truths will resonate with many, however: The modern workplace is a source of significant stress for many people, as are children.
More than 600 million people around the world put in 48-hour-plus workweeks, according to the International Labor Organization. And advances in technology — smartphones and broadband Internet — mean a blurring of the lines between work and free time. About half of Americans bring work home, according to a recent study.
The stress of being a parent while also working is borne out by a 2007 study that found older people feel less stress.
"Many older workers are empty-nesters," says researcher Gwenith Fisher, an organizational psychologist at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research (ISR). "They don't have the same work-personal conflicts that younger and middle-aged workers deal with, juggling responsibilities to children along with their jobs and their personal needs."
Health experts suggest exercise and adequate sleep are two of the best ways to battle stress.

                                      Gamble
Gambling, too, seems to be in our genes and hard-wired into our brains, which might explain why such a potentially ruinous behavior is so common.

Even monkeys gamble. A study that measured monkeys' desire to gamble for juice rewards found that even as potential rewards diminished, the primates acted irrationally and gambled for the chance to get a wee bit more.
A study published in the journal Neuron last year found that almost winning activates win-related circuitry within the brain and enhances the motivation to gamble. "Gamblers often interpret near-misses as special events, which encourage them to continue to gamble," said Luke Clark of the University of Cambridge. "Our findings show that the brain responds to near-misses as if a win has been delivered, even though the result is technically a loss."
Other studies have also shown that losing causes gamblers to get carried away. When people plan in advance how much to gamble, they're coldly rational, a study last year found. But if they lose, rationality goes out the window, and they change the game plan and bet even more.
                                       Gossip
We humans are evolutionarily set up to judge and talk about others, no matter how hurtful it might be, researchers say.

Here's how Oxford primatologist Robin Dunbar sees it: Baboons groom each other to keep social ties strong. But we humans are more evolved, so we use gossip as social glue. Both are learned behaviors.
Gossip establishes group boundaries and boosts self-esteem, studies have found.
In many instances, the goal of gossip is not truth or accuracy. What matters is the bond that gossiping can forge, often at the expense of a third party.
"When two people share a dislike of another person, it [gossip] brings them closer," says Jennifer Bosson, a professor of psychology at the University of South Florida.

10 Psychological Research Studies to Help You Tap Into Human Behavior and Increase Conversions

n order to prosper in the world of online sales and conversions, marketers must understand the basic principles of human psychology. Not confined to being "niche specific", understanding how our brains work can go a long way to helping us understand how we can successfully (and ethically) move people towards saying 'Yes'. Research into social and consumer psychology has come a long way, and there are a lot of lessons to be learned from these studies that smart marketers can apply right away. Below I've outlined 10 fascinating psychological research studies that will help you learn how people "tick", as well as how to apply them to increase conversions. 1.) Asking A Little Goes A Long Way... For Conversions Although at first glance it may appear to be counter-productive, one excellent way to find insights that can increase conversions is to stop focusing on why people say "yes", and zoom in on what makes they say 'no'. One research study focused on testing the change in charitable donations to the American Cancer Society by adjusting how requests were made in person (door-to-door). The researchers tested between two different request lines: "Would you be willing to help by giving a donation?" "Would you be willing to help by giving a donation? Even a penny will help." A small, subtle change; one might expect a difference, but not a statistically significant one. Surprisingly though, researchers found that those who were asked the second line were twice as likely to donate to the charity, jumping up to nearly 50% from the 28% response seen from the first line. The research concluded that people may be hesitant to take action when parameters are not set, in this case, they may have become paralyzed when not giving an "acceptable" minimal amount, and therefore chose not to act at all. One might think that this request would result in donations of a smaller amount overall, given that people were encouraged to donate "even a penny". Shockingly, researchers found that there was no difference in the average donation made per contributor, meaning that the second line did not cause people to donate in a lower amount overall. Lesson learned: Defining ideal parameters (or minimums) can help people break through "action paralysis". 2.) Personalization Makes People Satisfied Customers Waiters were able to successfully increase their tips by over 23% versus a control by changing a single aspect of their service. Which aspect do you think it was? A bigger smile? A "perkier" introduction? Surprise of the month: it was mints that allowed for such big tip increases. In a research study published in the Journal for Applied Psychology, researchers tested the conspicuous power of mints to effect the amount of tips that customers left, all other aspects of their service remaining the same. In the study, three variations were conducted: The first group included waiters/waitresses giving a single mint with the check, and also no mention of the mint itself. This increased tips by around 3% against the control group. The second group changed things up by having the servers bring out two mints by hand (separate from the check). In addition, they mentioned them to the table (ie, "Would anyone like some mints?"). This saw tips increase by ~14% against the control group. The last group had waiters bring out the check first along with a pair of mints. A short time afterward, the waiter came back with another set of mints, and let customers know that they had brought out more mints, in case they wanted another. This last group saw the increase of 23% mentioned above. What does this tell us about consumer behavior? That they just loooooove mints? No! Researchers concluded that it was the personalization aspect that won over patrons hearts (and their wallets). People enjoyed the follow up much more so than the mints they received: the fact that the waiter came back to see if anyone needed more mints left a positive impression after a critical marketing moment, the initial time after the sale. The greatest part about this study is that it reveals that nearly anything can be used as a follow up to generate this effect: free training for your product or service, a follow-up guide, an additional module that's not mentioned on the sales page, just follow up post purchase with a small gift and consumers will love you for it. Lesson learned: Personal follow-ups (especially with small gifts) go a long way to creating happy customers. 3.) Head Starts Lead to "First Place" Loyalty Have you ever wondered what makes online gaming so addictive? Gamers are probably already subliminally aware of a few aspects, the acquisition of "points" (in the form of new levels, upgrades, even new experiences) being one of the most influential ones. In fact, it's been argued that having a "gamer" style personality might make you a good SEO consultant! As for conversions, point systems have long been used to increase customer loyalty, but are they as optimized as they could be? Consumer researchers Joseph Nunes and Xaiver Dreze set out to answer this very question, and their results were surprising. In the now somewhat infamous carwash study, Nunes & Dreze tested the effect of "loyalty cards" by handing out sets of cards (with stamps) that allowed users to get a free car wash after eight or 10 previous washes. The thing was, they handed out two different types of cards to participants (those sneaky psychologists): One card required the minimal eight stamps to get the free car wash, but had no stamps "pre-checked" (all of the stamps were blank) The second card required 10 minimal purchases, but two of the stamps were already checked off (therefore, in reality, eight washes were still needed to get the free wash) This seemingly similar stamp system created some surprising results. The researchers found that only 19% of those with the first card came back enough times to get their free car wash, whereas 34% of those with the second card made it to the free wash (labeled the "head start" group). That means that by giving folks a 'boost' in their loyalty program (even though comparatively, both cards were the same), researchers were able to nearly double the loyalty of the customers using card two. The results seem clear: People are more likely to remain with (and complete) loyalty programs if you initially offer them some evidence that they've already made progress towards completing their next goal (throw in a few "bonus points" and the inner-gamer in us all will want to acquire more). Lesson learned: Loyalty programs are more effective when people can see "instant" progress. This progress makes them more likely to stick with it until completion. 4.) Admitting Your Faults Works When You Highlight Strengths Can it ever be good to admit when you come up short? According to research from social psychologist Fiona Lee, it can. In a study to measure the effect of admitting to faults, Lee and colleagues conducted a test that had participants reading one of two fictitious company reports. Both reports listed reasons why the company had done so “poorly” the past year (remembering that these were fake). The first report had the company listing strategic decisions as the main reason for poor performance. The second report had the company listing exterior events as the main reason for poor performance (economic downturn and increased competition). The results? Test subjects viewed the first company far more favorably than the second. Lee also found (after examining hundreds of these types of statements, over 14 real companies) that companies that admitted to faults also had higher stock prices the following year. Why? Lee's conclusion was that admittance to shortcomings in things like strategy showcased that the company was actually in control, despite their faults. Blaming outside occurrences that couldn't be controlled (even if true) often had the skeptics in the study viewing companies as not having the ability to fix the problem, but also as false or flaky. Lesson learned: When mistakes can honestly be attributed to strategy or an oversight, admitting to them can lead to more trust if we define exactly what changes are going to be made to fix them. 5.) Urgent Calls-to-Action Only Work When a Solution is Given Creating copy and sales pitches that come off as "urgent" is one of the oldest marketing tricks in the book. Additionally, the principle of "scarcity" is deemed to be one of the 6 pillars of influence as mentioned by Robert Cialdini. I have research that suggests, however, that these messages that invoke a sense of urgency are essentially useless unless there are very specific instructions given as a follow up. How so? In a study by Howard Leventhal, participants were tested to see what their reaction (and follow up percentage) would be when given an urgent, fearful message. The message involved the disastrous effects of the tetanus disease: each participant was given a pamphlet that spared no detail of the results tetanus can have on the body. As with any good psych study, situations were different for the control and experimental group: The control group received a pamphlet with just the information on the dangers of tetanus. The experimental group received a similar pamphlet, but theirs also included information on where and how to schedule an appointment to get vaccinated. The results? Participants who received the second pamphlet (with follow-up info) were much more likely to take action on getting vaccinated, and just as interesting, were more receptive to processing the information on the dangers of tetanus. This made them not only more engaged, but more likely to "make moves" as well. The thing is, the info provided in the second packet wasn't all that comprehensive. This lead to Leventhal concluding that people are susceptible to blocking out information that evokes a sense of urgency if they aren't given instructions on how to specifically deal with it. Meaning, people were apt to persuade themselves that, "I don't need to worry, this won't affect me," when given information they didn't know how to act on. Furthermore, people with the follow up info felt better prepared and were therefore much less likely to "put it aside" and out of their heads. Lesson learned: Evoking a sense of urgency works, but without information on how to act, information paralysis can begin and people will block out the intended message. 6.) Don't Listen to People: They Like Being Labeled! Most people (especially true in the Western world, particularly among Americans) would say that they enjoy being an "individual", and don't like being labeled. Yet, research has found, that when nudging people to get involved, most people respond favorably to being labeled. "It's not just a phase mom!" This isn't a tactic to persuade teenagers either, in fact, the research study in question analyzed the voting patterns of adults to see if labeling effected their overall turnout. Setting the stage: After being casually interviewed about their own personal voting patterns, half of the participants were told that they were likely to vote since they had been deemed by the researcher to be more politically active, and the other half weren't told anything. The catch: Participants who were told that they were more likely to vote were chosen randomly, meaning that they weren't actually more likely to vote, they were just labeled as such. The result: Those in the group "labeled" as more likely to vote... ended up voting far more often! In fact, on election day, that group had a 15% higher total turnout than the control group, despite the fact that they were selected at random. It seems that when we are labeled as being a part of a particular sect, our brain seeks to maintain this consistency (even if it didn't exist before!) and therefore causes us to act like those we've been labeled as in order to maintain a consistent personality. In a nutshell: we like being consistent, and when we're told by someone that we are "a part of ____ group", we are more likely to respond as such. For conversions, this means you need to evoke a similarity between your future customers and your current customers: ie, "Join over 215,000 of your fellow SEO addicts enthusiasts who get our Moz Top 10 newsletter!" (Rand, my bill is in the mail ;)). Get people to imagine themselves in a favorable group (people who vote are viewed more favorably by most) and they will take actions to remain a part of that group. Apparently, it's not always just a phase! Lesson learned: People will take action in order to maintain a consistent personality when they are "labeled". 7.) "Instant" Gratification Makes People Move If there is one thing our brain loves, it's getting stimulation immediately. In fact, the brain loves instant gratification so much, there has been numerous research on determining the results of some people's inability to control against this force, with particular interest in how deferring gratification can help us in achieving success in life. Powerful stuff! Fortunately, we're talking about the type of instant rewards that are not only good for our customers, but also good for our conversions. When deciding whether or not to “commit” to a purchase, customers (or in the case of building an email list, subscribers) are heavily influence by how fast they can increase their “utility”, or how fast they can receive gratification. In fact, several Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) studies have shown that our frontal cortex is activated when we think about “waiting” for something. Conversely, our mid-brain gets excited when we think about getting something right away. You can tap into this knowledge by invoking something instant, even if you aren't selling something digital! (If you are selling something digital, this becomes even easier) Structure your copy to include words like “instant”, “immediately”, or even just “fast” (for non-digital products) to engage that mid-brain activity that gets us so excited. If you aren't selling something, using a lead generation freebie (such as a free trial) is a great way to build this psychological aspect right into your site's value proposition and design. The key is to present these instant solutions as a “fix” to a pain point, as gratification is hastily chased when our mind seeks to resolve an unfavorable problem. Lesson learned: People respond favorably to "instant gratification" and are more likely to take action when fast rewards are on the horizon. 8.) Chest Pounding About Low Prices Can Decrease Conversions "The lowest prices in town!" Works for some businesses, can be absolutely disastrous for others. In a recent Stanford research study, results concluded that "comparative pricing" isn't always as reliable as marketers think it is. In fact, asking consumers to internalize their price comparisons can result in them taking the opposite action that you want: they'll buy your competitor's product! The study goes into depth about the importance of 'implicit' and 'explicit' comparisons when it comes to price: Implicit comparisons occur when a customer takes the initiative to compare two or more products. Conversely, explicit comparisons are those that are specifically stated or brought up by the marketer or advertiser. To test the results of both, Simonson & Dholakia set up two separate trials. The first trial involved selling CDs on eBay. Specifically, the researches listed albums for sale like Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' (I approve!), and then "framed" the listings in two very distinct ways. The initial listing was always started at $1.99, and it was "flanked" (surrounded by similar listings) by the same album, but the price was set at $0.99 instead. Similarly, the second trial had the $1.99 album "flanked" by two identical listings, but this time the price was set at $6.99. Essentially: (flank) $0.99 album <---> $1.99 album <---> $0.99 album (flank) and... (flank) $6.99 album <---> $1.99 album <---> $6.99 album (flank) The results? They were conclusive: The CDs flanked with the more expensive options ($6.99) consistently ended up fetching higher prices than the CDs next to the $0.99 offerings. “We didn’t tell people to make a comparison; they did it on their own,” said Simonson. “And when people make these kinds of comparisons on their own, they are very influential.” In the follow up study, researchers outright asked the customers to compare the $1.99 offering with the other two. Buyers, perhaps surprisingly, became increasingly more risk adverse and more cautious of the offerings and in their likelihood to purchase any CDs: “The mere fact that we had asked them to make a comparison caused them to fear that they were being tricked in some way,” said Simonson. The findings show that customers often frame prices in their own minds in relation to the prices of adjacent (or similar) products, meaning it's not always optimal to go "bottom dollar". Additionally, if you ask explicitly ask customers to compare products, they may react unfavorably to your predictions: as this study showed, it can cause them to take less action overall rather than more. Lesson learned: Asking customers to compare price on a product cannot always have the intended effect, instead, strategies that evoke an "internal" comparison could be more effective. Instead of focusing on price, perhaps you should... 9.) Sell Customers on Time Benefits, Not Money Why does a beer company like Miller have a slogan like: "It's Miller time!" They sell inexpensive beer, so isn't it better to focus on this price advantage? According to researcher Jennifer Aaker, that would be a terrible choice for a company selling cheap beer. “Because a person’s experience with a product tends to foster feelings of personal connection with it, referring to time typically leads to more favorable attitudes—and to more purchases.” It's tough to sell beer based purely on price, the competition is massive and the price differences are largely understood (some people don't mind paying more for "premium" beer, it's an accepted fact that they have to in order to get quality). How about the memories tied to your favorite inexpensive beer though? The BBQs, the parties as a college kid, they way a few drinks makes you feel: all memories tied to beer, and all memories Miller hopes to rekindle with their focus on "time enjoyed" rather than "money saved". Jenn Aaker's study seems to back up this assertion: the experiment set up a simple lemonade stand and used three different signs and measure their impact. The three signs read as follows: “Spend a little time and enjoy C&D’s lemonade” (time) “Spend a little money and enjoy C&D’s lemonade” (money) “Enjoy C&D’s lemonade” (neutral) Aaker and her fellow researchers also set the stand up with two six-year-old operators, so it would appear legitimate (I don't know about you, but that's dang adorable!) Even with this simple lemonade experiment, the results were crystal clear: The sign stressing time attracted twice as many people, many of whom were willing to pay twice as much. Wow! In addition to this, another study was set up to test how people's internal valuation of things they already owned were affected by recalling time or money. To do so, researchers asked college kids about their iPods, specifically one of two questions: “How much money have you spent on your iPod?” “How much time have you spent on your iPod?" Care to guess the outcome? Students asked about how much time they spent on their iPod were far more favorable in how they later evaluated the enjoyment they got out of their iPod (despite being randomly selected). The researchers pinpointed what they believed to be the underlying cause of these results: One explanation is that our relationship with time is much more personal than our relationship with money. “Ultimately, time is a more scarce resource—once it’s gone, it’s gone—and therefore more meaningful to us,” says Mogilner. “How we spend our time says so much more about who we are than does how we spend our money.” So, sell customers on time and enjoyment from a purchase, because unless you're running a luxury brand like Ferrari (where customers do respond favorably to recalling price), you could be evoking less than positive reactions. Lesson learned: People often value their time more than money, emphasis on time spent or time saved can be a better value proposition than the money they might save. 10.) If You Give Too Much, You'll Get Less in Return If people don’t know where to go, they will always find an exit. -Rafal Tomal, Lead Designer of Copyblogger Media The last study I'd like to discuss with you directly relates to increasing the amount of action that people will take. If it can be summed up in a single phrase, the takeaway is this: choice overload kills conversions. In The Art of Choosing, Sheena Iyengar, demonstrates perfectly the adverse effect that too many options has on conversions in a groundbreaking study involving... jam. In her research, she conducted a study on the amount of flavors of jam that were available for participants to “taste-test” in two different displays. Her results give an amazing example on the effect of choice overload on consumers. During multiple Saturday afternoons, Sheena (who is a professor at Columbia University) set up two different displays at an up-scale grocery market, alternating between the amounts of jam that she had on display. On one Saturday, she would offer 24 flavors, and on the other, she offered only six flavors. On which day do you think more people purchased the jam? You might be surprised, but it was the day with only six flavors. Why? When people are overloaded by choices, social psychologists are aware that they will often resort to their safety choice of nothing, and then move along to something else. And that is exactly what happened in this study. The findings also point out an eminent danger: Despite the fact that the 6 flavor test had a higher percentage of people purchasing the jam, the 24 flavor variety had more people taste-testing the jam. Choice is demotivating only for actual purchases, because although the 24 flavor set up had 60% of people stop by to try the jam on display (compared to 40% for the six flavor display), the six flavor display had 30% of people make a purchase, compared to ONLY 3% in the 24 jam display. Marketers must be careful when offering too many options to customers, and must be especially careful of tracking the right metrics when changing up their offering amounts.
